Weekly Roundup 6/8/2023
SATURDAY: It was another tough day at the office for our golfers with not one player beating their handicap in Saturday’s August Monthly Medal round.
Discussing the recent spate of low scores with a long-standing member on Sunday morning we struggled to pin point the reason(s) for the sub-par scores; the heavy wintery conditions and recent rain, or the tight winter fairways maybe?
Eventually we came to the conclusion that some of us are just getting old and worn out!
Not that any of that should detract from Rod Breen’s excellent round of 87-14-73 which saw him take home both the Medal and A grade winner’s trophy by one shot from Peter Mangan who posted a round of 88-14-74.
According to Rod, that was his first medal win in about 30 years so it is fair to say he was due. His score of 87 off the stick was also the best gross score of the day.
After that the scoring really fell away with Les Hall taking out B grade with a round of 104-27-77, finishing two shots clear of Johnny Heywood (103-24-79) and Paul Dickens (98-19-79) with Johnny getting the better of Dicko in the count back for runner up.
Dicko did pick up the ball for the best gross score in B grade as consolation, though the highlight of his round was his tee shot to the green on the dog leg 255m Par four 4th and while his missed his ten-foot eagle putt, a birdie still was still a good result.
Presentation is always a more interesting affair when Hally wins though he could do with a new speech writer. Suffice to say, hiring Daryl Sommers guy just isn’t working for Les or the crowd at Valley View!
Von Morris was the ladies’ winner with 112-32-80 while Jenni Bauerle was the runner up with 100-18-82 and she also took home the ladies’ best gross score ball.
Ball comp winners were Paul Kuiper with Nett 78, Mick McAuliffe (79), Paul Dickens (79) and Craig Larcombe (80).
Rory Kerr was the only player to hit the green on the par three 3rd and won the A grade nearest the pin ball on that hole, Miles Gould and Von Morris won balls on the 12th while Craig Larcombe picked up the voucher on the 15th with a tee shot to within three or four metres on the way to a par.
Tuesday’s winner was Pooch McHale with 36 Stableford points from Geoff Strachan with 35.
Mick McAuliffe (34) and Gavon Armstrong (33) won balls in the ball comp, Gary Jurey won a ball for nearest the pin on the 3rd and Graeme Harrison the voucher on the 15th though the effort may have tweaked his hammies again as he was noticeably absent on Saturday.
SCOOP
WEDNESDAY LADIES
"In a spectacular return to her former golfing self, Jenni Bauerle stole the Monthly Medal Show last Wednesday, with a lovely 90-19-71. This score also ensured she was clearly the A Grade queen, ahead of Runner Up Tracey Wade, who carded 99-18-81. But there's more: Jenni took home a ball for the lowest Scratch in A Grade.
Marie Watt was the B Grade winner with an impressive 106-32-74, but that was the end of her good fortune, losing two countbacks to Helen Armstrong for Lowest Scratch in B Grade (106) and Least Putts Overall (29). Marlene Topp was the B Grade Runner Up with 112-34-80.
Nearest the Pin winners were Jan McHale and Wendy Cox.
It was lovely to see Val Powley return to the game after such a long absence and we gratefully acknowledge Judy Sutton as our generous sponsor.
In other news of the day, we had a Playoff for the Silver Spoon. The contenders were: Von Morris (April), Helen Emery (May and July) and Judy Sutton (June). It became a playoff between just two players, with Von being unavailable. Congratulations to Helen Emery who will represent Valley View in Melbourne, later in the year.
Next Wednesday event will be supporting Breast Cancer Research and the sponsor is Ian Collie Pharmacy.
