Weekly Roundup 13/8/2023
This week’s golf report is dominated by the name McHale. Pooch McHale.
Arguably the most consistent golfer in the club, Pooch won both men’s comps this week starting with 38 points on Tuesday to record a five-shot win from runner up Geoff Strachan who finished with 33 points.
Playing off a handicap of ten he went one better on Saturday with a round of 39 points as he finished four shots ahead of runner up David Collins who got the better of Alan Curnow with 35 points in a count back.
His round included an excellent tee shot on the 12th as he claimed the nearest the pin trophy on that hole.
Pooch’s regular appearances at the top of the Jack Bond Build Pro leaderboard recently prompted a couple of newer members to ask me what his first name really is and to be brutally honest I was completely stumped.
A ring around of some of our older members failed to shed any light on the matter and a Wikipedia search was similarly unhelpful only throwing up a vague reference to “The Curmudgeon” leaving this as a mystery to be solved on another day.
Back to Saturday’s round and Marie Watt was the ladies’ winner with 34 points from Judy Greer with 31 points.
The balance of this week’s golf reports are as follows:
Saturday
Ball Comp: Alan Curnow (35 points), Mick McAuliffe (31) and Les Hall (31)
Nearest the Pin 15th: Von Morris
Tuesday:
Ball Comp: Graeme Harrison (32), Paul Kuiper and Les Hall (31 points in a count back from others)
NTP 3rd: Kelly Cheon NTP 15th: Mick McAuliffe
Our Pennant Team scored a 3-2 win against Numurkah at Shepparton Sunday in a tightly contested match.
Paul Dickens and Gordon Mackay lost their matches leaving us precariously poised at two down before our middle order in Daryl Harrison (3&2) and Mick McAuliffe (5&3) got things back on track with good wins.
That left captain Miles Gould to get the team across the line with a 2&1 win in a tense finish.
With one round to go (after a general bye next week) the win guarantees Valley View a spot in the final against the only other undefeated team (to this point) in Shepparton in three weeks.

LADIES WEDNESDAY COMPETITION
They say a joke is never the same twice, but Jenni Bauerle and Marie Watt were more than happy to repeat their wins from the week before, and stand in the winners' circle once again. Jenni had 34 points, ahead of a different runner up, Helen Emery, on 30 points.
Marie had the best score of the day, 35 points, ahead of the other Helen, (Armstrong) who had 31. No one landed on the 15th.
