Weekly Roundup - 17/9/23

SATURDAY: After struggling with the Par format of the game for what seems like an eternity it was like someone had flicked a switch with scores with a plus in front of them flashing up all over the leader board after Saturday’s Par round.

Maybe it was the warm sunshine clearing out the winter arthritic blues but where +1 would have won a winner’s trophy just a few months ago it just good enough to win a ball at the weekend.

Indeed 5 up was the winning score in A grade with two players in Peter Noble and David Collins posting that score after playing their best rounds in some time and an unlucky Peter Mangan finished a shot back with 4 up.

The count back went Nobby’s way thanks to a 39 off the stick (+3) back nine which gave him a round of 79 off the stick

Bud Thorsen will be knocking on the door of a return to A grade after he won B grade with +4 finishing two shots clear of runner up Geoff Strachan (+2).

The ladies also found the conditions to their liking with Janice Johnstone carding the best score of +3 to finishing one shot better than Marie Watt and Sharon Harrison who both had scores of +2.

Balls in the ball comp went to Peter Mangan (+4), Rod Breen (+3), Kelly Cheong (+2), Mick McAuliffe (+2) and Jenni Bauerle (+1).

In another rarity the club paid out on the full suite of nearest the pin trophies with the winners being:

Graeme Harrison (A grade 3rd), Peter Blackmore (A grade 12th), Les Hall (B grade 3rd), Paul Dickens (B grade 3rd), Janice Johnstone (3rd), Julie Neale (3rd) and the voucher on the 15th was picked up by David Collins which meant that he finished square with Nobby trophy wise.

It was good to see Peter Blackmore back playing competitive golf and picking up a NTP ball after a long lay- off with illness.

On Tuesday Geoff Strachan had the best score of the day taking out B grade with 37 points from John Neale with 36.

Mick McAuliffe won A grade with 34 points in a count back from Peter Noble.

Balls went to Geoff Squires (34), Bud Thorsen (34) and Kelly Cheong (33) while Daryl Harrison (A grade) and John Burrows (B) picked up nearest the pin balls on the 3rd.

LADIES WEDNESDAY GOLF

The final Monthly Medal, Stroke and putting round for the year was played last Wednesday. Leonie McMaster-Smith and Shirley Soares were our generous sponsors.
Two players shared the best score of the day. An extensive count back was required to decide the A Grade winner and Monthly Medalist. Jan McHale finished with 97-23-74 to take the trophies from Leanne Busch with 89-15-74. Busch had the best scratch score with her 89 off the stick.
Helen Armstrong took the honours in B Grade with 101-26-75 and she also had the best scratch score. Marie Watt finished one shot back with 106-30-76 to be runner up. Wendy Cox claimed the B Grade nearest the pin.
Leanne Busch handled the newly cored greens best to win the putting competition with 29 putts.
