Weekly Round Up 6 Nov 22
A big week at Valley View with the first round of the Club Championships on Saturday and the revived Valley View – Parkland challenge on Sunday, all of which was contested on freshly mown fairways that looked an absolute treat.
To Saturday and the recent two-man dominance of the club championships between Ash Kuiper and Miles Gould looks certain to continue as they wasted no time in setting themselves apart from the rest of the field.
Ash took the early honours with a round of 76-5-71 to win A grade in countback from Miles who carded a round of 78-7-71.
This gives Ash a two-shot lead in the race for the Club Champion title with Tom Kerr five shots back from Miles after a round of 83-11-72 while Daryl Harrison, Pooch McHale and Lawrie Casey all posted gross rounds of 84.
Ed McQuienn and Mick Coyne sit a further two shots back after rounds of 86 off the stick.
I will provide an update on the A grade handicap standings after Round 2 next week.
In B grade which is a handicap event, Des Partington got off to a great start putting a five-shot gap between he and his nearest challenger and in doing so took home the November Monthly Medal.
Des put together a round of 103-33-70 while Jeff Carnie finished as B grade runner up with 95-20-75.
Paul Dickens and John Neal put together Nett 76 rounds while John Burrows is a further shot adrift with a round of Nett 77.
Dicko’s gross score of 95 won him the B grade best gross score ball.
Jan McHale returned to the winner’s list taking out the ladies’ event with 93-21-72 from a relatively new member in Wendy Cox with 127-54-73.
Jan’s 93 off the bat was the best gross score from the ladies on the day.
Ball comp winners were Tom Kerr with Nett 72, Peter Mangan 73, Lawrie Casey (74), Mick Coyne (74), Graeme Harrison (73), Pooch McHale (75), Robin Quinn (75) and Daryl Harrison (75).
Kevin Humbert (A grade) and Peter Sherman (B) won the Nearest the Pin balls, Sharon Harrison was the only success story on the 12th while the voucher on the 15th went home with Ray Brereton.

On Thursday night Will Harrison claimed his first win at the club (the first of many I’m tipping) with a nett score of 32.8 from Dylan Gallivan with 33.3.
Finally, on a sad note Valley View lost another longstanding member last week with the passing of Fred Andrews.
A quietly spoken man, Fred was an excellent golfer in his time and was always happy to pass on his golfing knowledge be it at clinics held at the club or on an individual basis.
Although he has not played for some years he will be greatly missed by his friends at the club and our condolences go out to Fred’s family.
SCOOP
MELBOURNE CUP DAY - Tues 1 Nov
Melbourne Cup day provided plenty of fun and banter around the club house, but less golf than some had anticipated. Some who thought they would play, returned to the club house before hitting off, others set off but returned to the warmth of the fire when the heavy showers became persistent. Those who finished the 4Ball Stroke event returned wet, but ready with cheeky remarks for those who had pulled out.
Peter Blackmore and Gary Jurey were the winners with 66 nett and Kelly Cheong and Graeme Harrison had 68 nett to claim the runner up voucher. Tommy Ladhams was nearest the pin.
Wednesday saw the women return to the course having pulled the pin on playing in the rain on Cup Day. As the course dries out a little, scores are gradually creeping up, but have a long way to go before anyone plays to their handicap.
In the Stableford event, Jan McHale was the winner with 31 points and Judy Greer was surprised to learn that her 27 points earned her the runner up voucher.
Presentation Day was postponed and will now be held on Wednesday 23rd of October.
