Weekly Round Up 13 Nov 22

MENS REPORT

Ash Kuiper will take a two-shot lead into next week’s final round of the Club Championships after he and Miles Gould both posted scores of 81 in the second round at the weekend.

The two men who have won the last five Valley View club champion titles between them will go head-to-head for the 2023 title as Ash searches for a rare hattrick of wins (and fourth in five years) while Miles will look to add to the two titles that he won in 2017 and 2019.

Lawrie Casey with a two-round aggregate of 166 and Daryl Harrison (173) will make up the final group with Mick Coyne (175) the emergency if any of the aforementioned are unavailable.

In B grade Des Partington will take a 14-shot lead (before handicap) into the final round after a round of 97-33-64 which leaves his destiny in his own hands.

To the results from Saturday’s round and Rod Breen took out A grade with a brilliant round of 81-14-67 to finish three shots ahead of Alan Hausler with 88-18-70.

It was a case of what could have been for Rod as, starting on the 10th, he played the back nine in three over 39 and parred the first four holes of the front nine before dropping six shots over the last five holes.

Having dropped a shot off his handicap last week Des Partington played this week’s round off 32 (although he remains off 33 for the championships) so his winning score for the day was 97-32-65 and he finished four shots ahead of young Will Harrison with 109-40-69. Will was a popular runner up taking the voucher in a countback from Les Hall (97-28-69).

Des’ opening rounds of Nett 70 and Nett 65 meant he was a runaway winner of the Kyabram Showcase Jewellers watch for the best Aggregate Nett score after two rounds.

In the ladies’ event Wendy Cox went one better than last week’s runner-up placing finishing as a comfortable seven shot winner with a round of 117-51-66 from Jan McHale with 94-21-73.

Ball comp winners were Les Hall (Nett 69), Peter Noble (71), Ian Scurrah (72), Kelly Cheong (72), Lawrie Casey (72), John Neale (73) and Brendan Cornwall (73).

Nearest the Pin trophy winners were Miles Gould and Ash Kuiper (A grade 3rd and 12th), Peter Meighan and Ian Scurrah (B grade 3rd and 12th) Helen Emery (3rd) and Mick Coyne (15th).

So, going into the next week’s third and final round, the current state of play on the Championship leader boards is as follows:

Club Champion (Gross Score)

Ash Kuiper 157

Miles Gould 159

Lawrie Casey 166

Daryl Harrison 173

Mick Coyne 175

A Grade handicap title (handicaps in brackets)

Miles Gould Aggregate Nett Score 145 (7)

Alan Hausler Aggregate Nett Score 146 (18)

Lawrie Casey Aggregate Nett Score 146 (10)

Ash Kuiper Aggregate Nett Score 147 (5)

Peter Noble & Peter Mangan Aggregate Nett Scores 149 (both off 14)

B Grade handicap title (handicaps in brackets)

Des Partington Aggregate Nett Score 134 (33)

Les Hall Aggregate Nett Score 148 (28)

Will Harrison Aggregate Nett Score 149 (39)

John Neale Aggregate Nett Score 149 (26)

Geoff Squires Aggregate Nett Score 151 (26)

Tipping from those tables is difficult and splitting Ash and Miles for the main event is almost impossible. My gut feeling says Miles might just make up the two shots.

For the Nett A grade title, I’m going for the very consistent Lawrie Casey while in B grade it is hard to go past Des’ run away lead as he will also have an additional handicap advantage over the other contenders; the one exception being young Will Harrison who has a six-shot handicap advantage on our leader and as such looks to be the only player that could bridge the gap.

A big thanks to our Round 2 Sponsors in the Goulburn Murray Credit Union along with our watch sponsor the Kyabram Showcase Jewellers. Both have been long standing sponsors of our club championships and their support is greatly appreciated.

Tuesday’s results were:

Winner: John Burrows 36 points

Runner Up: Alan Hausler 35 points (count back) from Ed McQuienn and Peter Noble

Nearest the Pins: Mick McAuliffe (3rd) and Peter Blackmore (15th)
