Weekly Round Up 1/4/23
SATURDAY: A cool autumn day with winds gusting up to 43km provided a stern test for our golfers as they pursued the April Monthly Medal on Saturday.
Bud Thorsen was unphased though and put together an excellent round of 87-18-69 to claim the medal with a four-hot cushion.
The man with the smooth swing set up his win with a brilliant front nine of 41 off the stick, and that after he bogeyed the first three holes.
Three double bogeys in the first five holes of the back nine threatened to de-rail Thorsen’s round before he steadied with a par on the par 3 15th and then put the finishing touch to his round with a par on the par five 18th for a back nine score of 46.
Peter Mangan finished as runner up to Bud in both the Medal race and A grade field with a round of 86-17-73.
In B grade the long hitting Rory Kerr posted a round of 93-19-74 and finished one shot clear of Peter Meighan whose score of 106-31-75 gave him the runner’s up trophy in a count back from Joh Neale (100-25-75).
Helen Emery was the ladies’ winner with 92-15-77, also by one shot, with Judy Greer the runner up with a round of 102-24-78.
Ball comp winners were Alan Hausler with Nett 75, Rod Breen (75), John Neale (75), Kevin Bauerle (75), John Heywood (76), Michael Sheehan (77), Brendan Cornwall (77) and Mick Gallivan (77).
Nearest the Pin trophies were won by Kelly Cheong (A grade 12th), Jeff Carnie (B grade 3rd) and Gavon Armstrong (15th).
Kelly Cheong’s round of 86 off the stick won him the best gross score ball in a countback from Peter Mangan while Rory Kerr (B grade) and Helen Emery also won best gross score balls.
TUESDAY:A fortnight after Kelly Cheong tore up the course with a round of 76 in the mid-week comp Mick McAuliffe repeated the performance claiming a runaway win in A Grade with 40 points on Tuesday.
The Pres finished five shots clear of runner up Kevin Bauerle with 35 points.
Michael Sheehan was the B grade winner with 36 points from Frank Broucek whose 33 points won him the runner up trophy in a count back from Ian Scurrah.
Ball winners were Ian Scurrah, Bud Thorsen and Brad Murray (all with 33 points) while Mick McAuliffe won the only Nearest the Pin trophy to be claimed, adding the voucher on the 15th to his winner’s trophy.
A double headed retraction request came my way this week with both Pooch McHale and Kevin Bauerle threatening legal action after I referred to them as “friends” last week.
On the basis that I’m not sure how a court would determine which of them had been defamed the retraction is on hold pending legal advice.
At the time of writing the results from the Ern Healey Memorial day were not available but I’m sure they will be posted on our Web Site or Facebook page in the near future.
Finally, a belated cheerio to Peter Blackmore who has been unwell and laid up at home for some weeks now. Hope to see you back at the club soon Blackers.
