Weekly Round up - 12/3/2023

SATURDAY: Our member’s frailties and shortcomings with the par format were laid bare for all to see by some ruthless visitors at the weekend.

An excellent field was joined by the Broucek family from Bamawm who made a mockery of the local’s aversion of Par with Shane Broucek taking out A grade with a score of 3 up while Frank Broucek was a runaway winner in B grade with the outrageous score of +6.

That left our Valley View members to fight for the runner’s up trophies with Pooch McHale taking home the A grade runner up trophy with a score of square in a count back from Alan Hausler.

While Haus, as captain, could not swing the A grade count back his way, Vice-Captain Gavon Armstrong made sure his score of -1 got him across the line from Johnny Heywood in the count back for the B grade runner up trophy.

The ladies also produced some excellent numbers with Leanne Busch the winner with +2 in a count back from Clare Kerr.

Ball comp winners were Alan Hausler (square), Mick McAuliffe (square), Von Morris (square), Baden Thorsen (-1), Birthday Boy Kevin Humbert (-1), John Heywood (-1), Mick Coyne (-1), Dylan Gallivan (-1) and Lawrie Casey (-1).

Nearest the Pin trophies on the Par 3’s went to Kevin Bauerle (A grade 3rd), Paul Dickens (A grade 12th), Les Hall (B grade on both 3rd & 12th) and Peter Noble on the 15th with a very impressive shot although he had to settle for par after narrowly missing the two-metre putt for birdie.

Dicko’s shot on the 12th was so good that for a time he and his playing partners thought he had aced it.

TUESDAY: Gordon Mackay had yet another win on Tuesday taking out A grade with 38 points from Kevin Bauerle with 36.

John Burrows is another who seems to prosper earlier in the week and he won B grade with 37 points from Geoff Squires with 33.

Ball comp winners were Ed McQuienn (34 points), Kelly Cheong (33), Rich River’s Richard Caiolfa (33), Bud Thorsen (33) and Rory Kerr (32).

Nearest the Pin winners were Kelly Cheong (A grade), Steve March (B grade) and Bud Thorsen (15th).

Next week is a Stableford event and will be the last round with split morning and afternoon tee off times.

The following week (25 March) is the official season opener which, as is traditionally the case, will be a Mixed Pinehurst Medley with a Stableford comp for the men left on the shelf.  A BBQ lunch from around 11am will precede the tee off at 1215pm.

From 1 April assembly will be 11:30am for 12:15pm.

SCOOP

WEDNESDAY LADIES: Last week's Stableford round was generously sponsored by Jen's Fine Food and Coffee. Leanne Busch seems to have taken on the mantle of unlucky count back loser. After missing the Monthly Medal the previous week on a count back, this week, she again lost on a count back to Janice Johnstone, who won the day in A Grade when both finished on 34 points. Jan McHale was nearest pin for the second week in a row.
Gill Thorsen continued her fine form to return the best score of the day, 37 points, to win B Grade from runner up Helen Armstrong who finished with 35 points and who also was nearest the pin.
