Weekly Golf Report 9/6/24
Sport has a habit of immortalising its greats with eternally definitive nicknames.
Football had Mr Football (Ted Whitten), the Australian cricket team dubbed Mike Hussey with the equivalent moniker (Mr Cricket) and Valley View would like to introduce you to our own Mr Golf, Gordon Mackay; or as he is better known around the club, “Gordon the Golfer”.
Not much is known about “Gordon the Golfer”. He is something of an enigma to his fellow members though we do know that is a fruit fanatic (something a regular playing partner in David Collins picked up on very quickly) and is a rock-solid pennant performer.
He is also, arguably (not something I care for – arguing that is) the most consistent player at the club rarely going home without a trophy of some sorts and more often or not finishing in the top two on the A grade leaderboard.
So, it was on Saturday as (playing off a very respectable handicap of 11) he again finished as the A grade winner with 36 points taking the honors in a countback from Peter Mangan (handicap 13) who had also finished with 36 points.
In his first round at the club for some weeks Rory Kerr notched up 35 points and a two-shot win in B grade from the failed A grader himself, Alan Hausler, who finished as the runner up with 33 points.
The Quiet Achiever, Trudy Denham, was the best of the ladies with a good round of 35 points and secured a one-shot win from Helen Emery with 34 points – runner up in a countback from Sharon Harrison.
Balls in the ball comp went to Parkland’s Peter Clark with 35 points, Sharon Harrison (34), David Collins (33), Kevin Bauerle (33), Jan McHale (33) and Judy Greer (33).
Nearest the Pin trophies were won by Gordon the Golfer (A grade 3rd), Pooch McHale (A grade 12th),
Craig Larcombe (B grade 3rd and voucher on 15) and Helen Emery who picked up a dozen jackpot balls with a tee shot to within a metre of the cup on the 3rd hole.
On Tuesday, Kevin Bauerle returned to A grade with a bang posting easily the day’s best round of 38 points but it was a tough day at the office for the rest of the field.
Gordon the Golfer was at it again picking up the A grade runner’s up trophy with 35 points.
Peter “The Sherminator” Sherman was the B grade winner with 34 points from Kevin Wooten with 32 points.
Balls went to Peter Blackmore with 34 points, Daryl Harrison (33) Gavon Armstrong (31) and David Collins (31).
The course and the club had a win of sorts with not one player hitting a green from the tee of the par three holes.
