Weekly Golf Report 7.7.24
SATURDAY: A perfect winter’s day for golf and a day off from football gave Paul Newman the ideal opportunity to claim his first Valley View Monthly Medal shirt at the weekend.
The local football and cricket legend goes all right on the golf course too, currently playing off a handicap of 10 without much fuss.
A round of 81-10-71 got Paul across the line by one shot from four-time club champion Ash Kuiper and medal debutant and new member in Brenton Shepherd.
Ash finished as the A grade runner up with a round of 77-5-72 while Brenton took out B grade with a score of 93-21-72.
Ash and Brenton also took out the best gross score and best B grade gross score balls respectively.
Another multi-talented type in Cade Mueller was the B grade runner up with 94-19-75.
The feature of Paul’s round was his putting as he won the re-instated putting comp with 26 putts in a count back from Ash Kuiper and Mick Cromie. The countback went Paul’s way thanks to a very efficient back nine with the blade of just eleven strokes.
A round of 118-45-73 from Judy Sutton saw her take out the ladies’ comp by one shot from Sharon Harrison who put together a round of 99-25-74.
Helen Emery had the best gross score of 95 off the stick while Clare Kerr won the ladies’ putting comp with 29 putts in a countback from Julie Neale.
Balls in the ball comp went to Peter Blackmore with Nett 74, Clare Kerr (75), Judy Greer (76), Steve Browne (76) and Mick Cromie (76).
Nearest the Pin trophies went the way of Paul Newman (A grade 3rd), Ash Kuiper (A grade 12th), Geoff Strachan (B grade 3rd), Bud Thorsen (B grade 12th), Helen Emery (3rd), Jan McHale (12th) and Billy Ryan (15th).
Kevin Bauerle scored his second successive mid-week A grade win on Tuesday with 35 points from David Collins with 32 points.
Gary Jurey took out B grade with 35 points by one shot from Gavon Armstrong with 34 points.
From there the scoring, in keeping with the frosty weather, became decidedly cool as Peter Noble, Peter Mangan, Brendan Cornwall and Jeffie Carnie all won balls in the ball comp with 29 points.
Peter Blackmore was the only play to have the radar working on the Par three holes taking home the A grade nearest the pin ball on the 3rd.
Finally, on a sad note, we extend our condolences to Lawrie Casey and the Casey family on the passing of Frank last week.
