Weekly Golf Report - 31.12.23

The headline act in this week’s golf report is the massive clean-up effort from our volunteer ground staff and a large number of other members to get the course ready for play in time for Saturday’s Stableford event after the Christmas Eve storm that cut a swathe destruction around the course.

The cleanup effort across four days removed and cleaned up over two dozen fallen trees in a herculean effort which allowed play to proceed on Saturday.

In B grade the big hitting Paul Dickens put together a very consistent round to post the day’s best score of 38 Stableford points which gave him a two- shot win from Geoff Strachan with 36 pints.

The highlight of Dicko’s round was an incredible par on the hardest hole on the course, the par four 16th, after his ball somehow threaded its way through the trees and rough on the left side of the fairway to sit just enough inside the tree line (about 120 metres from home) to enable him to put his second shot pin high on the left side of the green. Incredible stuff!

In stark contrast to Dicko’s thumping stroke play we had the majestic strokeplay of Baden “Bud” Thorsen who won A grade with 37 points from Goron Mackay with 36 pints.

Meanwhile Tracey Wade put aside a close call with a tiger snake on the 16th to take out the ladies’ event with 36 points, four shots clear of the runner up in Nat McAuliffe with 32 points.

While Tracey managed to calm her nerves enough (after the run in with the slippery intruder) to complete her round, she did appear to be grasping her glass a little tighter than usual at presentation!

On a very even day score wise, balls went to Pooch McHale with (35 pints), Stephen Brown (35), John Neale (35), Wil Harrison (34), Peter Mangan (33), David Collins (32) and Lindsay Tatterson (32).

On the Par three holes Pooch McHale (A grade 3rd), Peter Mangan (A grade 12th), Joh Burrows (B grade 3rd), Helen Emery (3rd) and Stephen Browne (15th) all had success.

By the time this article goes to print in the Free Press we will have crossed the threshold of 2023 into 2024 so I trust that all our readers had a safe and happy New Years.

For what it’s worth I have two New Year resolutions: 1) To get my handicap back to 18 and 2) To solve the mystery of Pooch McHale’s first name!
