Weekly Golf Report 21/7/24

While the world’s best battled the elements in The Open at Royal Troon, strong winds and the threat of rain kept our golfers at home in droves on Saturday with only a small field of hardy slash foolish members braving the conditions for Saturday’s Stableford event.

Those that did turn up battled strong winds that gusted up to almost 60km on a cold day where the temperature did not climb above 12 degrees and an apparent / feel like temp that didn’t reach single figures. Fortunately, the rain didn’t arrive which meant that the field at least returned to the clubhouse dry.

None of that bothered Wendy Cox though who put together what was easily the day’s best score of 38 points to take out the ladies’ comp from Clare Kerr with 32 points.

What was most impressive abut Wendy’s scorecard was that she scored 22 of those points on the back nine which was playing at its most difficult.

Only one grade for the men which lead to a countback to find our winner with Jonty Sefton taking the honors with 34 points in the countback from Steve Browne thanks to a one shot better back nine of 15 points.

Balls in the ball comp went to a fast-finishing Craig Larcombe, Paul Dickens, Marlene Topp (all with 31 points) and a not so fast finishing Lawrie Casey with 30 points.

Glenn Laity won the A grade Nearest the Pin (NTP) ball on the 3rd and Steve Brown the B grade NTP ball on the same hole with a shot to within about four feet of the cup before nailing his downhill putt for birdie.

Craig Larcombe was the only player to reach the 15th with a well thought out tee shot winning the voucher on the way to making his par.

Just one field on Tuesday also but the scoring was so much better with Kevin Humbert the winner with 38 points.

The Harro’s in Graeme and Daryl went to a count back for runner up with 36 points each with Graeme getting the better of said countback leaving Daryl to take home a ball in the ball comp though he did add the voucher for NTP on the 15th to his kitty.

Glenn Laity (34 points) and Steve Pigott (32) also picked up balls and Steve also won the NTP ball on the 3rd hole.

Next Saturday is the Dom Cerrone Memorial 4BBB Stableford event and there will be a large array of trophies up for grabs on the day so be sure to find yourself a good playing partner for the day.

 Scoop

WEDNESDAY LADIES GOLF REPORT: The women were blessed with a lovely winter’s day for the stroke round played on Wednesday July 17.

In A Grade Helen Emery 92-17-75 played well with net one over par to win from Tracey Wade who was runner up with 100-18-82.

Also with a net score one over par was Von Morris 100-25-75 who took the B Grade honors on the day.  Bev Lyon 100-25-78 was runner up.

Despite some good golf on the day, no one hit the green on the 15th this week.
