Weekly golf report - 28/7/24

SATURDAY: After fine weather for the inaugural Dom Cerrone Memorial Day in 2023 conditions were not so great for Dom’s second Memorial Day with some cold weather and intermittent rain testing the fortitude of a good field of members and guests.

Nonetheless scoring on the day was quite good with young Will Harrison and the not so young Mick Coyne combining best putting together the winning score of 46 points.

It was an even contribution too with both players registering on the card nine times although from what a can gather (from sources close to Wil) Mick’s contribution could have been better if not for some errant putting! Perhaps another candidate for my putting academy??

Mick and Wil finished well clear of a five-way 41point log jam for runner up with the lengthy countback eventually going the way of Mick and Dylan Gallivan.

The four unsuccessful pairings in that countback in Alan Curnow and Craig Larcombe, Laurie Radley and Alan Curnow, Graeme Harrison and Peter Noble and Steve Usher and Alex Kydd filled the placings in the ball comp.

The score of 41 points was also significant in the ladies’ event with Von Morris and Wendy Cox posting that score to claim a one-point win from Julie Neale and Clare Kerr.

Von and Wendy also combined evenly with Von on the card ten times and Wendy eight.

Fittingly the Callaway event was won by Dom’s brother-in-law in John Meneghetti with a score of 76, while a former Build Pro workmate in Mick Kyle finished second with a score of 79.

Nearest the Pin trophies went to Peter Mangan (3rd), Alex Kydd (12th), Clare Kerr (12th) and Von Morris (15th).

Thanks to the contingent of Dom’s family and friends, especially sisters Carmel and Philly, that made their way out to Valley View to either play or for presentations on such a wintery day.

A big thanks to the group of members, all close friends of the man known as The Godfather, that put together the day and made it such a success.

TUESDAY: Some confusion with the results from Tuesday’s comp before Pooch McHale was declared the A grade winner with 37 points from Mick Coyne with 35.

John Burrows was the B grade winner with 36 points from Geoff Strachan with 34 points.

Glenn Laity (34 points), Kevin Bauerle (32), Peter Mangan (32), Ron Dixon (31), David Collins (31) and Kevin Humbert (31) were the recipients of another generous Tuesday ball comp while Paul Kuiper and Geoff Strachan were Nearest the Pin winners on the 3rd.

Despite the chilly mornings the winter golfers are starting to see some signs that spring is approaching; the gums are beginning to flower and the birdlife becoming more active around the course.

Bev Lyon was the A grade winner of the stableford round played on Wednesday with 35 points, 5 points clear of Julie Neale who was runner up with 30 points.  Tracey Wade was nearest the pin on the 15th.

Wendy Cox has been keeping the handicappers busy recently and played another solid round to win B Grade with 36 points.  Marie Watt with 33 points was runner up.
