Mens & Ladies Weekly Golf Report - 31.3.24
SATURDAY: After over 660 columns, probably two thirds of which have been reports on Stableford events, it was hard at this inspirational time of year to find things to inspire me from yet another Stableford comp on the weekend.
Not Bill Lawrie Casey’s round of 38 points which was good enough for him win A grade. But not good enough for him to hang around for the post round press conference to provide details of the highlights (if any) of his round.
Not runner up Daryl Harrison’s round of 37 points, 21 of which he put together on the back nine as he made his way around that side of the course in 38 shots.
Daryl’s eagle three on the par five 5th got me excited for a while as I thought he might share some of his haul with his playing partners, one of whom found his ball in the deep grass from which he made his chip to the cup.
As a struggling B grader, I was a touch envious of Lindsay Tatterson (Snow White’s eighth little helper) who won B grade with 36 points from Jonty Sefton who had 34 points and my eyes did flicker when I contemplated the fact that their combined score of 70 points is less than the age gap between them. Alas, Lindsay’s acceptance speech dulled the joy that I had derived from that stat.
Wendy Cox won the ladies’ comp with a respectable 34 points but there was nothing exciting about the three-way countback for runner up which Wanda Hacon won with 32 points from Von Morris and Marlene Topp.
A truly mundane ball comp saw balls going out to Peter Mangan with 35 points, Kevin Bauerle (34), Peter Noble (32), Von Morris (32) and Mick Coyne (32).
Lawrie Casey (3rd) and Daryl Harrison (12th) won the A grade Nearest the Pin balls as did Jenni Bauerle (3rd) and Leanne Busch for the ladies. Sadly, the listless lot in B grade could not hit either green.
As I mentioned at the start, I could draw no inspiration or excitement from any of the above in just another run of the mill Stableford event.
No! for golfing inspiration this weekend, I had to look further afield and way off course (much like this article) for golfing inspiration this weekend.
Rather, the golfing highlight for me at the weekend came on my 730am walk on Sunday from the golf cart safely negotiating the crossing of Allan Street from Waratah into Julia Street and being driven by none other than the Easter Bunny him/herself.
Not quite the resurrection but as one of the few drivers on the road to heed a Stop sign it touched a chord with me.
Tuesday’s winner was Kelly Cheong with 38 points from Ron Dixon with 37.
John Burrows, Paul Kuiper and Gordon Mackay won balls (though I don’t have their scores) and Graeme Harrison won the voucher on the 15th.
SUNDAY - ERN HEALEY DAY: Something positive to finish with and The Ern Healey Day on the 23rd was a great success with a big field turning out.
Mick Pell and Jason Sefton won the 4BBB Stableford event with 44 points in a four-way countback from Paul Newman & Jake Gascoyne, Ash & Paul Kuiper and Greg Ash & Brendan Acreman.
WEDNESDAY LADIES REPORT: Valley View women played a Stroke round last Wednesday which was generously sponsored by Betta Home Living and Electrical.
Best score of the day went to Tracey Wade who won A Grade with 92-18-74. Julie Neale was runner up with 98-22-76.
B Grade was won by Judy Sutton with 120-44-76 from the other Judy (Greer), who finished with 101-25-76.
Our Easter Egg competition was drawn. Winners were: Gloria Pell, Gary Jurey, Rod Geisler and Pauline Humbert.
