Weekly Golf Report: 6/4/25
SATURDAY: Countbacks were the order of the day with a log jam of players at the top of the Jack Bond Build Pro scoreboard following Saturday’s Monthly Medal round.
The first countback was required to find our monthly medal winner with two A graders in Glenn Laity (85-15-70) and Rod Breen (82-12-70) both going shot for shot in the same playing group.
After teeing off on the par five 8th, both players had excellent back nines (Glenn 41 off the stick and Rod 40) with the countback going Glenn’s way as he took home is first Valley View Monthly Medal.
Glenn made his move with five consecutive pars on holes 10 through 14 with that sequence broken by a double bogey on the par three 15th.
Rod answered parring four of the last five holes on the back nine but ultimately a double bogey on their last hole (the 6th) would cost Rod his chance of taking home the Medal.
Things were even tighter in B grade with a three-way countback which featured Corey Brown (93-22-71), Bud Thorsen (92-21-71) and Geoff Strachan (91-20-71) with Corey taking the honors from Bud and Strachannie settling for a ball in the ball comp.
Marlene Topp came up trumps in the countback to find the ladies’ winner, posting a round of 109-34-75 while Wendy Cox finished as the runner up with 101-26-75.
As already mentioned, Geoff Strachan led the ball comp winners with Nett 71 while Nigel Dow (71), Daryl Harrison (71), Gordon “the Golfer & Builder” Mackay (71), John McHale (some relation to Pooch I think) 72, Peter Blackmore (73) and Peter Mangan (74) collected the remaining balls.
Best Gross score balls went to Daryl Harrison with an excellent round of 78, Geoff Strachan (91) and Helen Emery with 96 off the stick.
It was a tough day on the par three holes with the aforementioned John McHale (A grade 12th), Gill Thorsen (3rd) and Kelly Cheong (15th) taking home Nearest the Pin trophies.
On Tuesday Mick McAuliffe took out A grade with 36 points while Daryl Harrison was the runner up with 34 points in a countback from Peter Blackmore.
An in-form Tony Williams won B grade with the day’s best score of 39 points while yet another countback revealed Alan Hausler as the runner up with 35 points from Geoff Squires.
Balls went to the aforementioned Geoff Squires and Peter Blackmore along with Kevin Bauerle and Geoff Strachan with 34 points.
Peter Blackmore (A grade 3rd), Mick McAuliffe (A grade 12th), Peter Sherman (B grade 3rd) and Tony Williams (15th) were trophy winners on the par three holes.
