Weekly Golf Report - 30/3/25
Friday night’s rain might have cleared in time for Saturday’s Par event but the clouds remained, hovering over the Build Pro scoreboard with only two players bettering their handicaps on the day with the board revealing a range of assorted scores ranging from the average to the mediocre.
In A grade Lawrie Casey put together a round of -1 highlighted by birdies on the par four 6th and par five 18th holes which were key to his win as, from a handicap of 10, he does not get shots on those holes. The resultant plus scores were crucial in recording a one shot win from Kevin Humbert and Peter Blackmore who both finished with -2 for the day.
Kevin got the better of Peter in the countback which was a real disappointment for Blackers who at one stage mid round was three up.
Former A grader Alan Hausler took out B grade with the men’s best score of the day with 1 up and he too was a one- shot winner with Rushworth’s Ian “Bomber” Rathjen hot on his trail with a score of square with the card.
Meanwhile the best score of the day came from Lynne Canavan who took out the ladies’ event with an excellent round of 3 up and she enjoyed a three-shot margin over runner up, Julie Neale, who finished square.
Balls in the ball comp went to Paul Dickens with -1, John Burrows (-1), Tracey Wade (-2), Peter Blackmore (-2) along with Nic Casey, Nigel Dow, Glen Laity, Wendy Cox, Tony Williams and Paul Pappin who all posted a score of 3 down.
On a windy day only Tony Williams (B grade 3rd), Jenni Bauerle (12th) and David Collins (voucher 15th) could find the target on the Par 3 holes.
Unlike Saturday, Tuesday’s scores were very good with Gordon “The Golfer” Mackay the A grade winner with 41 points playing off a handicap of thirteen.
Kevin Bauerle was the runner up with 39 points in a countback from Graeme Harrison.
Les Hall also had a score of 39 points which was good enough for him to win B Grade by one shot from Tony Williams with 38 points in another high scoring affair.
The unlucky Graeme Harrison lead the ball comp winners with his 39 points with other balls going to Mick Coyne with 37 points, David Collins (37), Kelly Cheong (36) and John Burrows (36).
Mick McAuliffe (3rd) and Peter Mangan (12th) won the A grade nearest the pin balls however the B grade NTP balls stayed with the club and the voucher on the 15th went the way of Steve Piggott.
Our Annual Tournament on Friday 11 April is fast approaching. The event is a 4BBB Stableford for both Men and Ladies with Assembly at 1130am.

Finally, it’s no secret that our obsession with our mobile phones can sometimes cloud our thinking at times and so it was late (very late) on Saturday as the last handful of golfers made moves to leave the club when a surplus mobile phone was noted sitting abandoned on the next table.
With the owner of the phone (who had long left the course) identified, one sharp problem solver among the group was quickly onto the problem, immediately and considerately offering to phone the owner of the said phone to inform him that it was in safe hands and would be returned shortly.
Of course there is only one problem with that solution, with the said problem solver more than once repeating his intention to phone the owner the penny finally dropped and he came to the realisation that the owner of the phone would not be able to take the intended call.
To be fair to the fellow in question, he had driven all the way from Melbourne earlier in the day to do office duty and play, then was involved in an arduous countback for the NAGA (won by Peter Nelson with -9 by the way) before then having to front up and MC the presentations. I’m tipping Gav slept pretty well on Saturday night.
