GOLF - Weekly Report 2/2/25

SATURDAY: Another hot summer’s day took its toll on our golfers with only three players managing to break even or outdo the handicapper.

The best of those was Lockington’s Ron Dixon who took home his first Valley View Monthly Medal with a round of 95-25-70.

Ron was also the day’s B grade winner with three shots to spare from fellow Lockington member in Jeff “Cobba” Carnie who had a round of 94-21-73. This not only won “Cobba the runner’s up trophy but the ball for best gross score in B grade.

Nigel Dow finished one shot behind Dixon in the Medal race with a round of 86-15-71 which was good enough for him to win A grade, by one shot also, from Peter Blackmore who had a round of 88-16-72.

My sources tell me that Blackers blew his medal chances with some errant putting missing several putts from inside a few feet and maybe a visit to my putting academy is on the cards though there is a waiting list at the moment.

Bev Lyon picked up another win leading the ladies’ home with the best net and gross score of 99-23-76 to finish two shots up on runner up Julie Neale who posted a round of 102-24-78.

Balls in the ball comp went to Peter Noble with Nett 73, John Burrows (Nett 74), Kelly Cheong (75), David Collins (76), Steve Browne (76), Ian Scurrah (76) and Peter Sherman (76).

Mick McAuliffe won the overall best gross score with 84 off the stick in a count back from Kelly Cheong while the Nearest the Pin trophies went the way of Peter Noble (A grade 3rd), Glen Laity (A grade 12th), Jeff Carnie (B grade 3rd) and Peter Sherman (voucher on 15th).

Tuesday’s winners were John McHale (A grade) with 36 points in a countback from Gordon Mackay and Les Hall in B grade by one shot from Jeff Carnie with 35 points.

Ball comp winners were David Collins with 34 points, Chris Boylan, Kelly Cheong and Peter Sherman all with 33 points.

Kevin Humbert won the voucher on the 15th while Kelly Cheong (A grade) and Kevin Wootten (B grade) picked up the balls for Nearest the Pin on the 3rd.

On Sunday our Pennant team lost 3 ½ - 1 ½ to Shepparton at Shepparton although with a spot in next week’s Semi Final at Kialla assured the result was inconsequential. Never the less I’m sure captain David Collins will be having a stern discussion with his players during this week’s review to make sure they are on their game for the Semi Final.

The individual match results from the weekend were as follows:

Gordon Mackay & David Collins                Won 3&2

Miles Gould & Jonty Sefton                         Squared their match

Mick Gallivan & Laurie Radley                    Lost 5&3

Wil Harrison & Paul Kuiper                          Lost 5&3

Peter Blackmore & Lawrie Casey               Lost 4&2

This Saturday’s event is Stableford and is the Final Round of the Summer Cup.

LADIES WEDNESDAY GOLF: It was pleasing to have more. Players returning from their summer break for last week’s Stableford round.

There was high praise for Marie Watt’s outstanding day on the putting greens, with accounts of twenty footers finding the cup and anything within 6 foot going straight in.

You would imagine then, that Marie would have taken the winner’s prize, but it was Janice Johnstone who took that honour after winning the count back when both finished with 35 points. There was no mention of the winner’s putting prowess, but presumably her putting was effective too.
