GOLF Weekly Report - 15/12/24
SATURDAY: A good field, including visitors from Rich River and Parkland Golf Clubs turned out on a warm afternoon for Saturday’s Ky Vet Clinic Black Sock Day which also happened to be the second round of the 2024-2025 Summer Cup.
Each grade was keenly contested with 39 points the magic number required to claim a winner’s trophy and only one or two shots separating our winners and runner’s up.
Indeed, there were four players within a shot of each other in A grade with President Mick McAuliffe taking the honours in a count back from Nigel Dow after they both posted scores of 39 points.
Being the good sport he is President Mick, who was also representing the day’s sponsor, declined to accept the winner’s Christmas ham and a grateful Nigel took that trophy home.
With 38 points each that left Daryl Harrison and Kelly Cheong to fight out a countback for the runner’s up ham with Daryl gratefully accepting it.
Laurie Radley was the B grade winner with 39 points by one shot from Des Partington who finished as runner up with 38 points.
Thirty-nine points was also the winning score in the ladies’ event with Helen Emery posting that score to claim a two shot win from Tracey Wade with 37 points.
Tracey also added the voucher for Nearest the Pin on the 15th to her runner’s up trophy.
Ball comp winners were Kelly Cheong with his score of 38 points, Paul Pappin (37), Ash Kuiper (37), Les Hall (36), Barry O’Brien (36), Jeff Carnie (36), Mick Gallivan (36) and Helen Armstrong (36).
Ash Kuiper (3rd) and Kevin Humbert (12th) were the A grade Nearest the Pin winners while Corey Browne (3rd) and Gavon Armstrong (12th) took home the B grade NTP trophies.
Unfortunately, the ladies could not find the target on either the 3rd or 12th greens.
A big thanks to the Ky Vet Clinic for its generous sponsorship not just of this week’s event but over a very long period (it is believed that Ky Vet Clinic is our longest continuous sponsor) and I’m sure that this week’s trophy winners will all enjoy their hams over the festive season.
After two rounds the early Summer Cup leader is Nigel Dow with a two round total of 76 points and he is six points ahead of Paul Dickens, Kelly Cheong and Geoff Squires all with 70 points while Gordon Mackay is next on the leaderboard with 69 points.
With the January and February rounds still to come there is no need for those further back in the field to panic.
Countbacks were the order of the day on Tuesday with Daryl Harrison the A grade winner with 36 points in a countback from Kevin Humbert while Geoff Strachan got the nod in the B grade countback with 35 points from Ian Scurrah.
Ball winners were Mick McAuliffe with 34 points, Mick Gallivan (32), Paul Kuiper (32) Lindsay Tatterson (32) and Bud Thorsen (32).
Mick McAuliffe won the A grade Nearest the Pin ball however the B grade NTP ball and the voucher on the 15th stayed with the club.
A big thanks to Gavon Armstrong, Peter Noble and Penguin Nelson who all have filled in as scribes over the last few months.
One point of clarification though, clearly Penguin is not “The Son of Scoop”!!
Finally, as this will be the last edition of the Free Press before Christmas, I would like to take the opportunity to wish all Valley View members and Free Press readers a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.
