Weekly Round Up - 5/11/23

SATURDAY: An outrageously good round of 87-21-66 has seen Stephen Browne claim his first Valley View Monthly Medal as the 2023 club championships got under way at the weekend.

After two double bogeys to start his round Steve got things back on track with a par on the par 3 third before really hitting his straps with a birdie, par, par, par sequence on holes six through nine as he finished the front nine with 41 off the stick.

A par on the 11th and another birdie the 13th kept him on track in an up and down back nine but even a triple bogey eight on the last wasn’t going to prevent him from claiming the November medal as he finished three shots clear of the B grade runner up in Alan Hausler.

It was a big day for Steve as his round was comfortably the best gross score in B grade and, to top it off, he won the Fitzgerald’s Farm Fresh meat raffle.

Haus had an excellent round of his own finishing with 89-20-69 which would be good enough to win the medal nine months out of ten.

The good news for the rest of the B grade field is that tennis commitments will keep Brownie from contesting the final two rounds of the championships.

Speaking of Championships two three-time Club Champions in Ash Kuiper and Miles Gould are expected to go head-to-head for the title again this year.

Ash got off to a great start with a round of 75-5-70 which saw him take out the A grade honors on the day in a count back from Mick Gallivan who had a round of 86-16-70.

The highlight of Ash’s round was an eagle three on the par five 14th hole as he pitched in from about a hundred metres. He also won the A grade nearest the pin ball on the third and the ball for best gross score.

Miles is three shots behind after a round of 78 (Nett 71) as he headed the list of ball comp winners which also included Pooch McHale (Nett 71), Kevin Bauerle (71), Kelly Cheong (72), Peter Noble (72), Ron Dixon (72) and Ian Scurrah (73).

With the first four names in that list all being A graders it looks like the race for the A grade handicap title is going to be a tight contest.

Nearest the pin trophy winners were Ash Kuiper and Alan Hausler (3rd) IQ Ryan (12th), Helen Emery (12th) and Alan Curnow (15th).

Clare Kerr was the ladies’ winner with 100-28-72 from Helen Emery with 93-18-75 a score that won Helen the ladies’ best gross score ball.

A big thanks to Lincoln Ferrari and Drummond Golf Shepparton for the generous sponsorship of Saturday’s event.

Kelly Cheong was Tuesday’s winner with 38 points from Peter Sherman with 34 points in a reduced field due to a group of our members being away on their annual golf trip.

Kelly also won the nearest the pin ball on the 3rd while the voucher on the 15th went to Mick Coyne.
