Weekly Golf Report 5/5/2024
Saturday’s May Monthly Medal was one of the most closely contested for some time with a couple of brilliant rounds coupled with a couple of tales of what might have been.
Ultimately two A graders emerged at the top of the leader board separated by just one shot with Graeme Harrison claiming the medal with a round of 81-14-67 thanks to a sensational back nine which he burned up with a one over par score of 37.
Harro finished one shot clear of a very unlucky Ash Kuiper who fired a brilliant 74-6-68 (37 on each nine).
Harros’ round will see him playing off a handicap of 13 next week while Ash’s score is a reminder how hard medals are to come by for single figure players.
The hard luck stories came from the B Grade with winner Gavon Armstrong dashing his medal chances with a nine on the par four 11th after hitting the wrong ball leaving him to wonder how good his eventual score of 93-24-69 could have been.
B Grade runner up Kerry Kreeck would have gone home with similar thoughts after a round of 97-27-70 which finished with two double bogeys and a quadruple bogey in a round that had been almost flawless for the previous 15 holes.
The ladies’ event was also a close thing with Helen Emery finishing with 90-17-73 and a one-shot win from Helen Armstrong 99-25-74.
To the ball comp which saw balls going to Peter Noble with Nett 72, Pooch McHale (73), Gordon Mackay (73), Jonty Sefton (75), Shane Dervish (75) and Peter Sherman (75).
Nearest the Pin trophies went to Daryl Harrison and Peter Sherman (3rd), Daryl Harrison and Gavon Armstrong (12th) and Pooch (15th).
The best gross scores on the day came from Ash Kuiper, Jonty Sefton (92 in B grade) and Helen Emery.
The club will have to restock the ball cupboard after Ash Kuiper and Miles Gould both raided the Eagles nest with eagle threes on the fifth and eighth respectively.
On Friday an excellent field (including visitors from eight clubs) turned up on a perfect day for golf to contest our Annual Tournament.
Julie Neale and Judy Greer stole the show with a massive 48 points to take out the ladies’ event by three shots from Leanne Bush and Sharon Harrison who took away the runner’s up trophy in a three-way countback from Helen Armstrong & Von Morris and Nancey Dunn & Sonia Verlinder (from Nathalia) with those pairings settling for balls in the ball comp.
John Neale and Gordon Mackay were two shot winners in the men’s event with 44 points from Brenton Sheppard and Paul Newman who finished as the runner’s up in a seven (yep seven) way count back. The unlucky pairs being Paul Kuiper and Peter Mangan, Ian Scurrah and Ron Dixon, Laurie Radley and Richard Feuk, Peter Noble and Graeme Harrison, Kelly Cheong and Dennis Hardie and Alan Hausler and Shane Dervish. Of that lot Ian and Ron and Laurie and Richard picked up balls from the ball comp.
Nearest the Pin trophy winners were Robin Minnie, Ian Martin and Trudy Denham (3rd), Phil Tucker (12th) and Laurie Radley on the 15th.
One of the highlights for the events on Friday and Saturday was the special appearance Valley View’s version of Bert Newton in former club captain Doug “TOF” Kajewski. It was great to see Doug at the club over the two days and we hope he will be back for another round soon. It was a shame we weren’t thinking sharply enough to have him Em Cee the presentations.
Tuesday’s Results

LADIES GOLF REPORT:
Valley View women played the first round of their M&S Group Accounting Club Championships last Wednesday. With two more rounds of Stroke to go, it's too early to predict eventual winners, but several players made an excellent start.
In A Grade Tracey Wade's winning score of 90-17-73 also earned her the best Gross win and to close out a successful day she was nearest the pin. Sharon Harrison was runner up with 100-24-76.
In B Grade, Helen Armstrong, 98-26-72, returned the best score of the day, finishing one stroke ahead of runner up Bev Lyon, 99-26-73. Following the pattern in A Grade, Helen Armstrong also took the best Gross win and was nearest the pin. To make her successful day even better, Helen was also the winner of the Monthly Medal.
Our thanks to ACM who sponsored the day's competition.
