GOLF Weekly report 18/2/24
SATURDAY: Our more established members were pleased to welcome back some old friends on Saturday with David and Allison Slimmons (now of Curlewis) and John Costello (Myrtleford) joining us for this month’s Par event.
It was a perfect day for golf too and our members made the most of the conditions with some excellent scores. None better than young Jonty Sefton who off a handicap of 21 finished with +7 on his way to an easy win in B grade and a birth in A grade, if not next week, then in the near future, I’m sure.
That number was way too good for the rest of the B grade field with Geoff Strachan the runner up with even par.
It was a closer call in A grade with Kevin Humbert taking the honors with +4 by one shot from Lawrey Casey with +3 and Rod Breen a further shot back with +2 after he scorched around the front in one over 37.
Wanda Hacon was the ladies’ winner with another good score of +3, three shots better than runner up Tracey Wade who finished even par.
The highlight of Wanda’s round was her tee shot on the par three third which finished less than half a metre from the hole as she claimed a dozen jackpot balls before tapping in for an easy birdie.
Ball comp winners were Rod Breen (+2), Brad Edwards (Square), Paul Dickens (Square), Kerry Kreeck (Square) and Craig Larcombe with -1.
Other Nearest the Pin trophies were won by Gordan Mackay (A grade 3rd), Lawrey Casey (A grade 12th), Ian Scurrah (B grade 3rd) and John Costello (voucher 15th).
Meanwhile Alan Curnow took home the ball for the best sledge of the day: With playing partners Rod Breen and Paul Kuiper reminiscing about their high school days (and by their own admissions they clearly weren’t model students), as they strolled the 8th fairway Kuips was bemoaning the fact that he had never been invited to a school reunion to which Alan offered back, quick as a shot, “maybe they thought you were in jail”!!!
With a hot one forecast Tuesday’s field was a lot lighter on for numbers so there was only one grade with Graeme Harrison the day’s winner with 38 points off his fast-falling handicap of 14.
Mick Coyne was the runner up with 37 points while Jeff Carnie (36) and Kevin Humbert (35) took home balls as did Ron Dixon for Nearest the Pin on the third.
Finally, Peter Noble took an unlikely group of Graeme Harrison, Peter Nelson and Kelly Cheong back to his old stomping ground to play at Tambo Valley on the weekend and reported back that Penguin Nelson won the day with 35 points in a count back from Nobby, Harro had 34 points and Kelly took home the NAGA with 28 points.
